Peace, Love, Motherhood: Sophie Machado
There is something so incredibly beautiful about motherhood and the sacred connection between mother and child. It is filled with trust, love, and inspiration. As Mother's Day approaches, we wanted to honor the mothers in our lives for the life-giving energy that they have instilled in us, the hugs they have given, the tears they have dried, and the love they have shared. We're honored to share this beautiful shoot with our Mamma Muse, Sophie Machado and the sacred role of motherhood.

What do you love most about being a mother?
Aw, what is there not to love? Being a mother is the purest form of unconditional love and the strongest bond this world has to offer. I think that is my favorite part - the love and the bond, and being wanted and needed. There is a quote that I read when I was pregnant with Jaxton and it goes, “Making the decision to have a child is momentous. It is to decide forever to have your heart go walking around outside your body.” It is true, my heart goes walking around in three little humans everyday.
What has being a mother taught you about yourself?
Being a mother has been the biggest blessing and my greatest achievement. I always knew I wanted to be a mother...as a little girl I would say when I grow up I want to be a mom. I think it came from my own mother and grandmothers. I have been surrounded with the most incredible women and they were the reason I knew I wanted to be a mother. Being a mother is a selfless job; but the amount of love you get in return is unfathomable. I made the choice to be a mother at a very young age as I was a step mother before I was a biological mother. I have learned wisdom, patience, to forgive, to love hard, to embrace even the smallest moments, to remain kind, to give thanks to God, to stay true to yourself, to trust, and to be a leader. Oh yeah, and did I mention, PATIENCE!?
What has been your favorite part of motherhood?
I love that while being a mother you get to do it your way…there isn't a perfect book and there isn’t always a “right or wrong” way. I love that I get to be unique. I get to look at my children and see that they are a reflection of Rob and I. They are our legacy and they will carry on what we instill in them with their children. It is amazing to think that they will raise their children and go on to live how we live, by example.

What is the hardest part about being a mother?
I think the hardest part of being a mother is balancing everything. It's challenging to maintain your duties while staying connected with your children. Life is all about balance and compromise. Some days I feel I have failed but then I am given another opportunity and another day to learn and grow from our mistakes.
What three values do you wish to instill in your children?
Love, faith, kindness and respect. (Sorry, that’s four!)

What's your favorite way to spend the day with your family?
Being home with my family, embracing each other, and just being silly and enjoying one another. We love hanging in the front yard with blankets, food, and music. It’s a real state of Bliss. Rob and I often sit back and say to each other “Wow, we made those humans”, and smile.
Motherhood is a very creative process. How does creativity play a part in raising kids?
Oh creativity and how I love it! Well let’s define creativity; “the use of the imagination or original ideas, especially in the production of an artistic work.” Motherhood starts with creation. As mothers, we are creating and growing human beings inside our bodies. I’m always creating new ways to teach, learn, lead, explore, love, and enjoy my children. As a mother I am an artist and my children are my great pieces. I get to create and imagine with them until my last breath. Nothing is more beautiful than that.
You travel all the time with your family. Where is your favorite family-friendly place to travel?
Traveling with children is hard work! Lots of outfit changes, occupying children for hours, TSA lines, oh yeah and Jet lag! But through it all we enjoy it and it has taught our children so much. I would have to say Bali, Indonesia is our favorite family getaway destination. We stay at a place called the Uluwatu Surf Villas and it is our home away from home. The Balinese people are so loving and kind, they love our children and our children love them. We feel so blessed and safe there.

How has surfing and the ocean played a positive part in raising your children?
Surfing is a lifestyle, not just a sport. The ocean makes up 70% of our world and brings everything closer. It has taught our children, loved our children and we do our best to respect and love it back. The ocean is a place where we can be free and where we can be one with nature. Living right in front of it has been everything to our children.
How do you balance being a mother, a wife and your own unique self?
Many women become mothers and wives, but being a mom and a wife are my most cherished titles and I treat them with the highest respect. Everyday I choose to be a mother and a wife, and some days are harder than others. Having time to yourself is very important. Even if it means a run or a coffee date. I love to have fun and I think I just always try to instill that in my family. I mean, we only have this time on earth, so lets make loving memories and have fun doing it.
What does being a Spiritual Gangster mean to you and your family?
Spiritual Gangster is an incredible brand! We love how much they give back, as charity is vital for raising the vibration of the world around us. We have the Rob Machado Foundation and believe that in this world it is so important to give back. We are so happy to have been able to collaborate, we look forward to watching the brand grow and to grow with them.
in love and Bliss,
xoxo
